Revelation 9: The Fifth and Sixth Trumpets

Good evening, and welcome to our Friday Night Bible Study. Tonight, we continue our study of Revelation 9 (verses 13-18). In this chapter John is speaking about the fifth and sixth trumpets. Chapter 8 covered the first, second, third, and fourth trumpets; but notice that the last three trumpets (5, 6, and 7) seem to be set apart from the other four; they appear to signify the three woes spoken of in Revelation 8:13. Those woes mark the deepest darkness and most painful intensity of the Great Tribulation, the darkest days in human history.

 

The first four seals and trumpets presented judgments directed against the earth. In the first four seals, these were the “four horsemen” delivering tyranny, war, death, and famine in the earth (Revelation 6:1-8). In the first four trumpets, the vegetation, seas, fresh waters, and sky is stricken (Revelation 8:1-13). 

 

The last three seals brought cosmic disturbances, the cry of the martyrs, and the prelude to the seven trumpets (Revelation 6:9-17). The last three trumpets loosed demons into the earth from the abyss, and deadly plagues came into the earth which together will kill the majority of mankind (this does not include God’s remnant). We will be reading and discussing additional scriptures that will provide added clarity in our reading and understanding. The topics we will be covering in this study are:

 

• The Fifth Trumpet (verses 9:1-12)

• The Sixth Trumpet (verses 9:13-21)

The Fallen Angels

• Genesis 6:1-6 (...the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose)

• Isaiah 14:12-15; Luke 10:18; 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 (How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning)

• 2 Peter 2:4-11 (For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment)

• Jude 1:5-7,14-19 (And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day)

• Isaiah 24:17-23 (Fear and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth)

• Matthew 8:28-32 (When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men)

• Luke 8:26-31 (And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss)

• Revelation 20:1-3 (Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand)

• Revelation 1:18 (I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death)

• Daniel 7:9-14 (I watched then because of the sound of the pompous words which the horn was speaking; I watched till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame)

Deception in the Latter Days

• 2 Peter 2:1-3,12-17, 18-22 (But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction)

• Jude 1:3-4 (For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation)

• Revelation 20:7-10 (Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth)

• 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 (Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition)

• 2 Corinthians 4:1-6 (But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God)
